CHICAGO - Behind three goals and an assist from senior forward Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team recorded an 8-1 non-conference win over Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) Tuesday in Chicago. In addition, senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) scored two goals and tallied an assist as the Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
SXU jumped ahead 4-0 in the first half with Herbst scoring the game's first goal just three minutes into play. Bartley tacked on two of Saint Xavier's first-half goals in the ninth and 27th minutes, respectively, while freshman midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) scored his first goal of the season in the 19th minute of Tuesday's game.
In the second half, Moody Bible got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 55th minute of play. However, sophomore midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) scored just over a minute later to put the Cougars back up by four on his first goal of the new season. Bartley turned in SXU's sixth goal of the game in the 67th minute and Herbst tacked on his second and final score in the 78th minute. Senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina/Bellevue University) scored the last goal of the game for the Cougars (his first of the season) with just under eight minutes to play in regulation.
Saint Xavier (2-1 overall) returns home on Thursday, September 8, to take on Davenport University (Mich.) for a 4 p.m. non-conference game at SXU Stadium in Chicago.
