CHICAGO - Led by senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team scored four first-half goals to cruise to a 7-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Wednesday at SXU stadium in Chicago. With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play this season. SXU got on the scoreboard early when senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina/Bellevue University) scored on a pass from Herbst just two minutes into the game. Senior forward Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) tacked on Saint Xavier's next goal just over three minutes later when he broke free for an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of play. Herbst recorded his first goal of the game in the 34th minute of regulation off an assist from Meier to put SXU ahead, 3-0.
Bartley tacked on another first-half goal for the Cougars off a penalty kick just five minutes before halftime to give SXU a 4-0 advantage. Herbst posted Saint Xavier's first two goals of the second half with his first coming in the game's 57th minute off an assist from junior defender Gabriel Razo (Chicago, Ill./DePaul University) and the second coming in the 63rd minute on a pass from sophomore forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College).
St. Francis (Ill.) tacked on its lone goal of the game with just under seven minutes left to play in regulation when freshman midfielder Ben Miller found the back of the net. The final goal for SXU came in the 89th minute of play when Vidakovic scored on an assist from freshman defender Johnny Ruggles (Georgetown, Fla./Crescent City). The Cougars outshot the Fighting Saints, 12-2, in the game. Saint Xavier (5-2 overall/1-0 CCAC) continues its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Saturday, September 24, to face Judson College (Ill.) in Elgin. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
