CHICAGO - Behind 78 rushing yards and a touchdown by senior running back Luke Schillo (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park), the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University football team used 34 first-half points to cruise to a 34-9 home victory over William Penn University (Iowa) Saturday in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (5-2 overall/4-1 MSFA) also got another solid performance out of their starting sophomore quarterback Billy Yeo (Matteson, Ill./Western Michigan University), who completed 17 of his 22 pass attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

Freshman wide out Billy McKeon (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led the SXU receiving corps Saturday with six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, while senior Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) recorded five grabs for 51 yards and a score. Senior wide receiver Andy Ricca (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City) also had a trip to the endzone and had three catches for 56 yards through the air. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Joe Miller (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) led Saint Xavier with 12 total tackles, including two-and-a-half tackles for losses.

With 6:28 left in the first quarter, a 10-yard connection of Yeo to McKeon helped the Cougars build an early 7-0 lead. Following a fumble by William Penn on the ensuing kickoff, SXU got the ball back in Statesmen territory and needed just one play to net another touchdown, a 35-yard completion from Yeo to Ricca. Freshman kicker William Brasel connected on a 24-yard field goal to make the score, 14-3, with 13:28 to play in the first half. However, special teams turnovers continued to hamper the Statesmen. With 9:11 left in the half, Saint Xavier scored another touchdown when junior punter Mark Gronzalski fumbled the ball and junior Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) scooped it up and ran it back 32 yards to help put his team ahead, 21-3.

Big sacks late in the first half by sophomore defensive lineman Scott Kooistra (Chicago, Ill./Shepard) and junior defensive lineman Jared Kain (Carlisle, Iowa/College of DuPage) helped stifle the WPU offense for the remainder of the second quarter. The Cougar offense took complete advantage scoring on a two-yard rush by Schillo with 2:53 to play in the first half and then again on a 15-yard catch by Gerritsen from Yeo (missed extra point) with 39 seconds remaining to build a 34-3 halftime lead. Following a scoreless third quarter, William Penn scored its lone touchdown of the game midway through the fourth quarter on a two-yard pass by junior quarterback Daniel Beck to junior wide out Adam Randall. However, the two-point conversion attempt failed to make the final score, 34-9.

Saint Xavier (5-2 overall/4-1 MSFA) heads to Quincy, Ill., on Saturday, October 21, to face MSFA Midwest League foe Quincy University (Ill.) at QU Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
