CHICAGO - Despite a second-half goal by senior midfielder Almir Hot (Belgrade, Serbia/Lindenwood University), the Saint Xavier University (Ill.) men's soccer team had trouble containing the powerful offense of No. 6 ranked Judson College (Ill.) falling 4-1 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Eagles improve to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCAC.
Judson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind back-to-back goals by junior midfielder Mark Howlett and senior midfielder Arron Craggs, respectively, within two minutes of one another just over 10 minutes into the game. Junior forward Andrew Weissman supplied the assist on the Howlett goal, while senior forward Carlos Guillen posted the assist on the second goal by Craggs. Craggs tacked on another goal with just under eight minutes to play in the first half to give Judson College a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Hot was able to score SXU's lone goal on a penalty kick in the game's 73rd minute to cut the Eagles' lead to two, 3-1. However, Howlett scored his second goal of the day on a breakaway with just over two minutes left in regulation to seal the 4-1 victory. Freshman Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) posted seven saves as the Cougars starting goalkeeper Saturday.
Saint Xavier (5-6 overall, 2-3 CCAC) continues conference play on Tuesday, October 10, with a road game against Robert Morris College (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Chicago.
