Men's Soccer - Sun, Oct. 23, 2005
CHICAGO - Despite a first-half goal by sophomore forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not pick up the victory Sunday tying Grand View College (Iowa), 1-1, in double-overtime, non-conference action at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The Cougars (9-7-1 overall/5-3 CCAC) have wrapped up their regular season schedule and await their seed and opponent for the quarterfinals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament, which begins on Saturday, October 29.
Saint Xavier got on the scoreboard first when senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) found Vidakovic open in front of the net and Vidakovic headed the ball home to build a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of play. Grand View answered just over eight minutes later when freshman forward Lyall Menzies found the back of the net off an assist from freshman forward Danny Sharples.
The game remained tied throughout the second half and the two 10-minute overtime periods despite both teams creating chances to score. Grand View outshot Saint Xavier, 8-5, in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Coccaro (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished with seven saves for SXU, while Grand View freshman goalkeeper Cameron McKay recorded four saves. The Cougars return to action next weekend with a quarterfinals game in the CCAC Tournament. SXU's opponent has yet to be determined.
