Des Moines, Iowa - A goal by freshman forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) just two minutes and eight seconds into overtime gave No. 9 ranked and No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University (Ill.) a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 5 seed Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Saturday's championship game of the 2007 NAIA Region VII Women's Soccer Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. With the victory, the Cougars (18-3-2 overall) capture their second straight region tournament championship and automatically qualify for the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year.
The game-winning goal came as the result of a free kick attempt that sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) sent near the goal. Senior midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan) was able to flick the ball over to Steinhaus for the overtime score. Wagner was stellar in goal for the Cougars finishing with two saves and her 10th shutout of the season. SXU out-shot TCC, 17-9, in the game, including a 6-2 edge for shots on goal.
Saint Xavier (18-3-2 overall/8-1 CCAC) now awaits its seed in the 2007 NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, November 14, in Daytona Beach, Fla. This marks just the second region tournament championship and national tournament appearance for the Cougars in the 11-year history of the SXU women's soccer program.
