Men's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 22, 2005
Deerfield, Ill. - A goal off a header by senior forward Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) was not only the game-winner for the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team, but also a birthday present for Bartley as SXU came away with the 2-1 victory in overtime against Chicagoland Collegiate Athetic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity International University (Ill.) Saturday in Deerfield. The Cougars improve to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the CCAC standings (third place) with the win, while the Trojans fall to 8-7 overall with a 6-2 league mark.
Saint Xavier took an early 1-0 lead when senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina/Bellevue University) scored on an assist from senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) in the game's 10th minute. TIU answered just over 20 minutes later when midfielder John Bacon's 50-yard ball was met by forward Nate Bogdanovich to even the score, 1-1. Both teams had chances to score in the second half, but failed to capitalize forcing an overtime period.
In the sixth minute of overtime, senior defender Anthony Cappello (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) sent a birthday gift in the form of a cross to Bartley for the game-winning header. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Coccaro (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished with fives saves for SXU. Saint Xavier (9-7 overall/5-3 CCAC) returns to action on Sunday, October 23, with a non-conference game against Grand View College (Iowa) at SXU Stadium in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
