St. Augustine, Fla. - Despite goals by senior forward Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) and freshman midfielder Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not pick up a non-conference win against Flagler College (Fla.) falling, 3-2, Thursday in St. Augustine, Fla. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 8-6 overall, while Flagler improves to 4-8. Flagler got off to a hot start behind back-to-back goals by senior midfielder Sean Frye in the seventh and 12th minutes, respectively, to build a 2-0 advantage. SXU answered in the 39th minute with a goal by Bartley off assists from senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) and junior midfielder Fabian Neprjachin (Halle, Germany/ Bellevue University).
In the second half, a goal by Flagler's junior defender A.J. Martin in the 54th minute put the Saints back up by two goals, 3-1. Castro scored Saint Xavier's second goal of the game off an assist from senior midfielder Marek Podczerwinski (Summit, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) in the 81st minute of play to narrow Flagler's lead to one, 3-2. However, SXU could not tie the game over the final nine minutes. The Saints outshot the Cougars, 19-16, in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Coccaro (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished with seven saves for SXU. Saint Xavier (8-6 overall/4-3 CCAC) wraps up its four-day Florida trip with a 7 p.m. (eastern) game against Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) on Saturday, October 15.
