Milwaukee, Wisc. - Senior forward Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) recorded the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 64th minute of play to propel the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.), 3-2, Tuesday night in Milwaukee, Wisc. SXU improves to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in league play with the win. The Cougars got off to a hot start scoring the first goal of the game in the second minute when freshman midfielder Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) headed home a ball at the far post off a cross from senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina/Bellevue University). Cardinal Stritch tied the game just seven minutes later when sophomore forward Nikola Santrac scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Pat Rich.
Senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) put Saint Xavier back in front, 2-1, when he scored from the right side with junior midfielder Fabian Neprjachin (Halle, Germany/Bellevue University) providing the assist. However, the Wolves were able to tie the score again nearly seven minutes later when a scramble in the goal box produced a goal by CSU's freshman defender Mike Warren in the 32nd minute of regulation.
In the second half, Neprjachin was taken down in the penalty area and Bartley turned the resulting penalty kick into the game-winning goal with 26 minutes left to play in the game. Cardinal Stritch outshot SXU, 10-7, in the game. Freshman goalkeeper James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry) recorded two saves for the Cougars. Saint Xavier (8-5 overall/4-3 CCAC) takes a break from its conference slate and heads to Florida to play Flagler College (Fla.) on Thursday, October 13, at 7 p.m. (eastern) followed by a Saturday game (October 15) against Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) also at 7 p.m. (eastern).
