Springfield, Ill. - Despite a goal and an assist by freshman forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point), the Saint Xavier University (Ill.) men's soccer team fell to Robert Morris College (Ill.), 3-2, Tuesday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action in Springfield, Ill. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Eagles improve to 3-9 overall and 3-3 in the CCAC.
Robert Morris struck early with a goal by freshman midfielder Antonio Pacheco in the game's fourth minute off an assist by junior midfielder Adrian Skital. The Cougars tied up the game, 1-1, in the 19th minute when Kekelik found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom). Robert Morris got back-to-back goals within a couple minutes of one another with just seven minutes remaining before halftime to build a 3-1 lead. The first goal was on an unassisted breakaway by Pacheco, while the second one came from Skital off a Pacheco assist.
A goal by senior midfielder Almir Hot (Belgrade, Serbia/Lindenwood University) in the 80th minute helped Saint Xavier close to within a goal, 3-2, in the closing minutes of regulation. Kekelik recorded the assist on the goal by Hot. The Cougars out-shot Robert Morris, 20-12, in the game. Sophomore James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry) got the start in goal for SXU and finished with nine saves.
Saint Xavier (5-7 overall, 2-4 CCAC) takes a break from conference play and heads to Florida on Thursday, October 12 for a two-game stretch. The Cougars will play St. Thomas (Fla.) on Thursday at 3 p.m. (eastern) and then meet Flagler College (Fla.) on Sunday, October 15, at 11 a.m. (eastern).
