Men's Soccer - Fri, Nov. 12, 2004
CHICAGO - After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods of scoreless action, the NAIA Region VII men's soccer semi-finals match at SXU stadium between No. 5 seed Saint Xavier University and No. 1 seed and No. 5 nationally ranked Judson College (Ill.) came down to a penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Judson was able to convert on four of its five shot attempts to advance to Saturday's 1:30 p.m. championship game against No. 2 seed Grand View College (Iowa). SXU ends its season with an overall record of 12-6-5.
The game is considered a tie for record purposes, which gives Judson College its first non-win of the season at 19-0-1 overall. Senior goalkeeper Enrique Orejel (Chicago, Ill./Curie) finished the game with 10 saves and knocked away one of Judson's five penalty kick attempts. Junior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry CC) and freshman midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) each scored on their penalty kick attempts; however, SXU had one goal saved by Judson's junior goalkeeper Aron Hyde and another sail wide left of the goal.
In the second semi-finals game of the day, Grand View College (Iowa) got an unassisted goal from freshman Frederik Soborg with 13:37 remaining in the first half, which proved to be the game-winner as GVC advanced over the No. 6 seeded Olivet Nazarene University Tigers, 1-0. Grand View College and Judson will meet Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at SXU stadium in Chicago to determine which team will receive an automatic bid for next week's NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
