CHICAGO -- First-year Saint Xavier University men's soccer coach Ed Vucinic earned his first win with the Cougar program Saturday in a 2-1 victory over William Penn University (Iowa) as part of the Saint Xavier University Classic at SXU stadium. The Cougars are currently 1-1-1 overall this season. With the Cougars trailing 1-0 at halftime, junior forward and team co-captain Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) tied the game in the 64th minute of regulation on a penalty kick. With just four minutes left to play in the game, freshman forward Tim Engel (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) recorded the game-winning goal off a pass from senior goalkeeper Enrique Orejel (Chicago, Ill./Curie). Orejel posted six saves between the posts in the winning effort.
"The thing that pleased me the most about Saturday's game was that the guys found a way to win," said Vucinic. "It was our second game in less than 24 hours and it wasn't our prettiest performance, but the team stuck together and pulled out the win. It is early in the season and the team is going through a lot of transition right now, so to put that aside and focus on winning is a big achievement."
The Cougars (1-1-1 overall) stay at SXU stadium to host Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, September 8. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
