Miami Shores, Fla. - Junior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) recorded a goal and an assist, but it was not enough to lift the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team over No. 7 ranked NCAA Division II opponent Barry University (Fla.) in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday at Buccaneer Field in Miami Shores, Fla. The Cougars fall to 9-4-1 overall with the loss.
Barry jumped ahead early scoring two goals in the first 13 minutes of play to build a 2-0 advantage. Herbst found freshman midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) alone in the penalty box and Prunckle was able to capitalize for his third goal of the season. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, the Buccaneers scored another goal with just over two minutes before halftime to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
Barry came out firing in the second half scoring two goals less than three minutes apart in the 79th and 81st minutes, respectively. Herbst then tacked on SXU's second goal with just under seven minutes to play off an assist from senior defender Tim Neighbors (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC). Senior goalkeeper Enrique Orejel (Chicago, Ill./Curie) finished with six saves for Saint Xavier. SXU was outshot 22-14 in the game.
The Cougars wrap up their annual Florida trip with a game at St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla., on Sunday, October 17, at 1 p.m. (eastern).
