Des Moines, Iowa - Senior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) pitched all seven innings and gave up just four hits and a walk with one strikeout as No. 15 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 5 seed William Penn University (Iowa) Wednesday in the 2006 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cougars (37-12 overall/16-2 CCAC) advance to play at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, against the winner of today's No. 2 seed Waldorf College (Iowa) and No. 3 seed Grand View College (Iowa) game.
In addition to the win, SXU also learned that four of its players were named to the 2006 NAIA All-Region VII Softball Team. Wilson, senior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg), junior outfielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic), and junior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) all represented SXU all the All-Region Team with Kilduff named the 2006 Region VII Player of the Year. It was the first time in school history that Saint Xavier softball had four players named to the NAIA All-Region VII Team as well as the Player of the Year.
In Wednesday's game against William Penn, both pitchers came out on fire with neither allowing a single run through five innings of play. However, in the bottom of the sixth, William Penn recorded two of its three errors in the game and Saint Xavier capitalized scoring two unearned runs, which proved to be the difference. Barker opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and advanced to second on an error in left field. A fielding error by the shortstop in the next at-bat allowed Kilduff to reach first and brought Barker home from second for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Lovato brought Kilduff home from second with a RBI double. Barker finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Kilduff went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI.
Saint Xavier (37-12 overall/16-2 CCAC) continues play in the three-day 2006 NAIA Region VII Tournament hosted by Grand View College (Iowa) on Thursday, May 11, with a 2 p.m. game against the winner of today's No. 2 seed Waldorf/No. 3 seed Grand View match-up.
