CHICAGO - A three-run, fourth-inning home run by junior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) helped give the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team a 3-2 victory in game two of its non-conference doubleheader with NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday on "Senior Day" at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (32-12 overall/16-2 CCAC) could not pick up the sweep falling, 1-0, in the first game despite an impressive outing on the mound by senior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster).
Wilson pitched a gem in game one allowing just seven hits, one run, and no walks over seven innings with three strikeouts. However, the SXU offense had trouble recording both hits and runs of its own in the first game totaling just three hits and no runs en route to the 1-0 loss. Wilson fell to 16-6 overall this season with the loss. Saint Xavier had its chances throughout the game leaving nine runners stranded on the base paths in game one.
In game two, the Cougars still had trouble producing hits, but at least took advantage of the three hits they produced. Sophomore righthander Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was stellar on the mound throwing all seven frames and giving up just five hits, two runs (one earned), and no walks with seven Ks. She improved to 8-2 overall this season with the victory. The Rangers led, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the fourth when Lovato took full advantage of runners at first and second and sent a towering blast out of the ballpark to give SXU a 3-1 lead. UW-Parkside got a RBI single in the top of the sixth, but could not plate another run in the game.
The Cougars (32-12 overall/16-2 CCAC) wrap up their 2006 regular season slate on Saturday, April 29, with a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. Start time for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
