CHICAGO - Despite seven combined hits from senior second baseman Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior first baseman Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton), No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University could not pick up a victory dropping a pair of games to NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) Tuesday in non-conference softball action in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (31-11 overall/16-2 CCAC) dropped game one, 10-6, and then could not get their offense on track in the nightcap falling, 12-3, in five innings.
Although SXU lost both its games on the day, there was some good news. Junior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) tied two school records for stolen bases in a season (26) and runs scored in a season (52). The team also set a new season mark for home runs (37) with Kilduff hitting two out of the ballpark in game one of the twinbill. With the pair of homers, Kilduff continued to pad her new individual season record total with her 15th and 16th and pulled to within nine (43) of the NAIA career home runs mark (52).
In game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, Saint Xavier kept pace with the Flyers trailing, 6-5, after the first three innings thanks in part to a third-inning grand slam by Kilduff. However, Lewis scored four more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away and SXU was only able to add a run in the fifth off a RBI single by Bodi. Kilduff and Bodi each finished 3-for-4 at the plate in game one, while Barker went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) and sophomore rightie Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) each pitched three innings of game one Tuesday. Wilson took the loss throwing the first three frames and allowing 12 hits, nine runs, and a walk with one strikeout. Shearer gave up four hits, a run, and no walks with a strikeout.
The SXU offense stalled in game two as Lewis scored in each of the first four innings to cruise to a 12-3 victory. The Cougars scored all three of their runs in the first inning with Bodi recording a two-RBI single and junior catcher Lindsey Hall (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) driving in the final run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Saint Xavier finished the second game with just two hits. Sophomore Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) took the loss for the Cougars throwing three innings and allowing 10 hits, nine runs (seven earned), and a walk with no strikeouts. Shearer pitched an inning of relief in game two giving up three hits, three runs, and a walk.
The Cougars (31-11 overall/16-2 CCAC) return home to face NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside (Wisc.) on Thursday, April 27, at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. Start time for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
