Palos Heights, Ill. - Senior second baseman Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) set two school records Tuesday as No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University swept its final two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) games of the season defeating Trinity Christian College in doubleheader action, 15-3 and 6-5, in Palos Heights, Ill. The two conference wins puts the Cougars atop the league standings at 16-2 and secures them at least a share of the 2006 CCAC regular season title for the sixth straight season.
With eight games remaining in the regular season plus postseason competitions, Kilduff broke the single-season marks for both home runs and RBI during Tuesday's doubleheader. She currently has 13 home runs and 60 RBI this spring. The previous record for home runs in a season was 12, shared by Kilduff during the 2005 season and Kris Dugan in 2000. For RBI in a single season, the old mark was 56, set by Dugan during the 1998 campaign. Kilduff went 4-for-6 at the plate Tuesday with three home runs, five runs scored, and six RBI.
In addition to Kilduff's record-setting day, several other Cougar players had remarkable individual outings in Tuesday's sweep. Junior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) had a hot bat as well going 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, a homer, two runs scored, and six RBI. Junior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was also tough finishing 3-for-6 as well with a home run, a run scored, and four RBI. On the day, the Cougars combined for 12 extra-base hits, including six homers.
SXU jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the first four innings of game one behind back-to-back, six-run innings in the second and third. Trinity Christian scored its three runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to keep the game from ending early. The Cougars racked up 13 hits in the first game of the twinbill en route to the 15-3 victory. Game two was a completely different affair as Trinity Christian used a fifth-inning grand slam to take a 5-3 lead. Fortunately for Saint Xavier, solo homers by Kilduff and Lovato in the top of the sixth tied the game, 5-5, and another solo shot by Barker in the seventh gave SXU the 6-5 win. Senior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) came into game two as a reliever and put the Trolls down 1-2-3 in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Cougars (29-9 overall/16-2 CCAC) continue their regular season with a non-conference doubleheader against Bethel College (Ind.) on Thursday, April 20, at SXU Softball Field. Start time for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Chicago.
