Huntington, Ind. - With a 3-for-7 showing at the plate and a run scored and RBI by junior catcher Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC), the Saint Xavier University baseball team left Huntington, Ind., Saturday with a doubleheader split in non-conference action over the weekend. The Cougars (7-14 overall) dropped the first game, 10-2, in seven innings before rebounding in the nightcap to pick up the 4-3 victory.
In game one, junior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the only SXU player in the game to record more than one hit. As a team, Saint Xavier managed just five hits in the first game en route to two runs. Senior centerfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) picked up the first RBI for the Cougars in the top of the first inning bringing Buske home from second on a RBI single. Buchler recorded the team's second RBI in the third inning on a RBI single. Huntington pulled away in the third and fourth inning scoring nine of its 10 runs over the two-inning stretch.
In the nightcap, SXU's bats started to heat up cranking out 10 hits for its four-run output. Buchler and freshman shortstop Pete Miller (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) each went 2-for-4 with a run scored in game two. The Cougars got on the scoreboard quickly posting a run in the first inning on a RBI single by junior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). Huntington scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning. However, a pinch-hit RBI double by freshman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and a RBI groundout to first base by Buske in the top of the sixth tied the score, 3-3.
Following a scoreless seventh inning, junior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Penn) hit a one-out double in the top of the eighth inning and advanced to third on a single by Miller. A sac bunt by freshman centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) brought home the game-winning run. Freshman rightie Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the win in relief pitching the final five innings for SXU. He allowed three hits and a walk with one strikeout and improved his win-loss record to 2-1 on the season.
