CHICAGO - Paced by three home runs from senior second baseman Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg), the No. 18 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team got two big Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) wins Tuesday in its doubleheader sweep of University of St. Francis (Ill.) at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (25-9 overall/12-2 CCAC) shut down the Fighting Saints' offense in game one to pick up an 8-0 victory in five innings and then followed that performance with a 13-5 five-inning win in the nightcap.
In the first game of the day, junior first baseman Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) recorded a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first to give SXU an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars kept the offense rolling in the second inning scoring five more runs capped by a two-run shot to left field by Kilduff. In the bottom of the fourth, Kilduff tacked on two more RBI with a two-out triple. She finished game one 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and four RBI, while junior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Senior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) posted the win on the mound for Saint Xavier throwing all five innings and allowing five hits, no runs, and no walks with two strikeouts.
The Cougar offense continued to produce runs in the second game scoring three in the first inning behind a three-run homer by junior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower). However, the Fighting Saints tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the second inning on RBI hits from sophomore second baseman Jamie Redman and junior first baseman Gina Procissi. Kilduff again answered the call with her second homer of the day, a three-run shot over the left field fence, which Bodi immediately followed with a solo home run to cap a four-run second inning for Saint Xavier.
USF trimmed the SXU lead to two runs, 7-5, scoring two more runs in the top of the third. However, after a scoreless fourth inning, Kilduff ended the game early with a walk-off, three-run homer to left field to cap a six-run, fifth inning and end the game early. Kilduff finished game two 2-for-3 with three runs scored and six RBI, while Lovato went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Wilson recorded the game two win coming in to relieve sophomore starter Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) in the third inning. Wilson threw the final three innings allowing four hits, two runs (one earned), and no walks with four strikeouts.
The Cougars (25-9 overall/12-2 CCAC) continue their CCAC slate on Thursday, April 13, with a doubleheader on the road against Robert Morris College (Ill.). Start time for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Orland Park, Ill.
