CHICAGO - Behind a game-two no-hitter for sophomore righthander Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic), the No. 20 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team completed the doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Friday on a cold afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (10-6 overall/4-0 CCAC) needed just five innings in each game to secure the victories winning game one, 11-0, and picking up a 16-0 win in the nightcap.
Although the weather was cold, the SXU bats stayed hot throughout the afternoon. In game one, the Cougars racked up 13 hits and scored 10 of their 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and senior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) each went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while junior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore rightie Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the game-one win pitching all five innings allowing five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
Game two was more of the same for Saint Xavier as the team blasted 19 hits en route to 16 runs in the first three innings, including a 12-run second inning. Junior first baseman and co-captain Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) recorded a grand slam in the second inning and finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and six RBI. Junior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) was also tough with the bat in the nightcap going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Bartels got the shutout victory allowing no hits and one walk over five innings in addition to two strikeouts.
The Cougars (10-6 overall/4-0 CCAC) take a break from their CCAC slate with a home doubleheader against Aquinas College (Mich.) on Saturday, March 25. Start time for the twin bill is 12 p.m. at SXU Softball Field.
