CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University sophomore Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) and freshman Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Illinois/Shelbyville) will represent Saint Xavier University at the 2006 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships this weekend in Fresno, Calif. The SXU men's track team is closing out its inaugural outdoor season of competition this spring with its first-ever national qualifiers.
Bugarin will compete in Thursday's (May 25) 10,000-meter run at the NAIA Outdoor Championships after earning a qualifying time of 31:08 in the event at the Hillsdale College Relays on April 29. A time of 31:50 or better is the qualifying standard for the NAIA Championships. Lavaire qualified to take part in the marathon at the national meet by posting a time of 1:16.30 at the 13.1 Valparaiso Mini-Marathon on April 9 in Valparaiso, Ind. This time easily bests the national qualifying mark of 1:17.40. "There is no doubt that I am both extremely pleased and proud of the performances of these fine young men," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "While I feel that they will perform well in their respective events, the very achievement of qualifying in their first official collegiate season is a great accomplishment in itself. This is a great foundation in which to build the future of this new program."
