CHICAGO - Despite goals by senior forward Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill./McHenry Co. CC) and freshman midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team fell to Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 3-2, Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The Cougars fall to 9-8-1 overall with the loss and now await a bid to participate in the 2005 NAIA Region VII Soccer Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, November 8.
Herbst scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute of play off a cross from senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina/Bellevue University). ONU tied the game, 1-1, just nine minutes into the second half on a goal by senior midfielder Juan Bay. Herrera put SXU back on top with just over 20 minutes to play in regulation when he found the back of the net off an assist from junior midfielder Fabian Neprjachin (Halle, Germany/Bellevue University).
However, with just over six minutes remaining in the game, Olivet Nazarene junior midfielder Austin Hoxie scored to tie the game again, 2-2. With less than two minutes left in regulation, a penalty kick was issued to ONU after an illegal tackle by SXU was made within the goal box. The Tigers capitalized on the penalty kick scoring the go-ahead goal, 3-2, and holding on in the remaining seconds to win the game.
