CHICAGO - Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) junior catcher Alison Konsoer hit a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the game-winning run as the No. 2 seeded Tigers defeated No. 18 ranked and No. 1 seed Saint Xavier University (Ill.), 5-4, Saturday in the championship game of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, May 6, at the Inwood Sports Complex in Joliet, Ill., but rain suspended the game in the fourth inning and it was resumed Saturday at Saint Xavier University.
SXU was the first team to get on the scoreboard, 1-0, with back-to-back, two-out doubles from sophomore catcher Lindsey Hall (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) and senior second baseman Maura Ryan (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara), respectively, in the second inning. Olivet answered with a RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game, 1-1. A solo home run by junior shortstop Colleen Kilduff (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) to lead off the third inning gave Saint Xavier back the lead, 2-1.
A sacrifice bunt by ONU in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the score again, 2-2, before SXU's senior first baseman Christina Jesse (Varna, Ill./Illinois Valley CC) started the sixth inning with a lead-off homer to put the Cougars back up, 3-2. A RBI single by Kilduff in the top of the seventh inning gave Saint Xavier a two-run cushion, 4-2. However, a throwing error to first base by SXU in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Tigers to score two runs and tie the game, 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, ONU led off with a single and used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second base. A flyout to right field allowed the baserunner to move to third after the tag and with two outs and a runner on third, Konsoer recorded the game-winning single to shallow centerfield. Junior righthander Jessica Wilson (Munster, Ind./Munster) took the loss on the mound for SXU pitching all 7.2 innings and allowing nine hits, five runs (three earned), and five walks, while striking out three Olivet batters. The Cougars finished the game with an uncharacteristic four errors in the field.
