Davenport, Iowa - Senior outfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) went 5-for-7 on the day with three doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in non-conference doubleheader action Wednesday at John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars (7-16 overall) gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth of game one to fall, 9-8, and then allowed a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to break up a 3-3 tie in the second game.
SXU came out strong in game one scoring six runs in the top of the first inning thanks in part to two-RBI singles from Gregerson and sophomore leftfielder Bryan Druktenis (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards), respectively. However, St. Ambrose answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first to trim the Cougars' lead to two, 6-4. After Saint Xavier picked up two more runs in the second frame sparked by a RBI single from freshman first baseman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara), SAU was able to trim another run off the lead in the bottom of the second with three more runs. After three scoreless innings, the Fighting Bees took advantage of free bases from a lead-off walk and a hit batsman to score the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In game two, St. Ambrose used its offensive momentum from the first game to post three runs in the first inning and took an early 3-0 lead. A double from Gregerson followed immediately by a two-run homer by junior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in the top of the fourth brought the Cougars to within a run, 3-2. A RBI double in the sixth inning by junior first baseman Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) tied the game, 3-3. However, despite getting the first two batters out in the bottom of the seventh, SAU again took full advantage of free bases putting runners on with a walk and a hit batsman, which led to a game-winning RBI single.
Saint Xavier (7-16 overall) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Wednesday, March 29, to open its 2006 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate with a game against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The nine-inning game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
