Esparza named CCAC Runner of the Week

CHICAGO, Ill. – Earning his second career race victory, Saint Xavier junior Gabriel Esparza (Eisenhower HS / Blue Island, Ill.) was named the CCAC Runner of the Week on Wednesday.

Esparza claimed the individual men's title at the Purdue-Northwest Classic last Friday, completing the 8K course in 26:09.7. The junior finished just nine seconds shy of his personal record in the season-opening race.

The weekly award is the first for Esparza, and continues a streak that stretches back to 2010 in which Saint Xavier had at least one Cougar earn CCAC Runner of the Week at some point in the season.

Esparza and the rest of the men's and women's cross country teams will next compete on Friday afternoon, when they run at the 50th edition of the National Catholic Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The men's 5-mile race is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. CDT.
