NABC Recognizes SXU Menís Basketball for Academic Accolades

Kansas City, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognized the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team and also three of its players for academic excellence earlier this week.  As a team, the Cougars were one of just 125 colleges and universities nationwide from all divisions of the NCAA and NAIA to compile a collective grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better (3.013).  In addition, three SXU players, senior Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and juniors Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and Brandon Marren (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) were cited on the 2013-14 NABC Honors Court for being a junior or senior with at least a 3.2 GPA.

"First and foremost, the players I coach at Saint Xavier University are here to get an education and earn a degree, not just play basketball," said SXU men's basketball coach Tom O'Malley.  "When your players commit to this philosophy as well, my job as a coach is much easier.  I'm very proud of what these young men have accomplished in the classroom and looking forward to working with many of them again in a few weeks."

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA Division I and II, must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2013-14 season.  The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches.  All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today's student-athletes.  The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education.
