CHICAGO – Behind 18 points and eight rebounds by junior guard Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), No. 5 ranked and No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University pulled away in the second half for a 64-42 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The defense was key again for the Cougars holding the Crimson Wave to just 27 percent shooting (17-for-62). SXU also was tough on the boards out-rebounding CCSJ, 56-31, in the game. Saint Xavier advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday, February 28.
Freshman guard Sidney Prasse (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) drained three three-pointers en route to 13 points for Saint Xavier, while junior forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) logged her 23rd double-double of the season with 12 points and game-best 14 rebounds. Senior point guard Jordan Brandt (Winamac, Ind./Winamac) also finished in double figures in scoring Wednesday with 11 points and four assists. The Cougars opened the game on an 11-3 run and went ahead by as many as 15 points multiple times in the first half. Leading 34-25 at the break, Saint Xavier used a 16-1 surge that began near the 11-minute mark of the second half to pull away for good. Calumet College was held to just 17 points in the second half.
Saint Xavier (27-4 overall/16-2 CCAC) advances to the CCAC Tournament semifinals held in Hammond, Ind., at Purdue-Calumet's Fitness-Recreation Center. The game takes place on Friday, February 28, with the Cougars taking on Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Game time is slated for 7 p.m. central.
