Bourbonnais, Ill. – Junior Leslie Rosario (Fort Myers, Fla./Neosho County CC/North Fort Myers) claimed a 22nd place individual finish to lead the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team to a sixth-place team finish at the Midwest Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University Saturday at the Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars finished with 138 team points, while host Olivet Nazarene won the meet with 35 team points. Rosario completed the 5K (5,000 meters) course in a time of 20:11.69 to pace SXU in its first race of the 2013 season since its original opening race, the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) Opener, was cancelled the previous weekend.
Freshman Dana Martin (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was next across the finish line for the Cougars with a time of 20:28.38 for 24th place. She was followed by freshman Nicole Watkins (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) in 25th place at 20:41.54 and junior Ali Proffitt (Lyons, Ill./College of DuPage/Morton) in 33rd place at 21:25.83. Sophomore Ann Kolker (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) rounded out SXU's top five finishers with a time of 21:32.38 for 34th place. The meet was very competitive with the top two finishers, No. 3 Olivet Nazarene and No. 22 Taylor University (Ind.), ranked in the 2013 NAIA Women's Cross Country Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll.
Saint Xavier takes this weekend off and returns to competition on Friday, September 20, at the National Catholic Championships hosted by University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The meet kicks off at 3:15 p.m. (central) at the University of Notre Dame Golf Course.
