CHICAGO – Senior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) and freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) both had big games offensively in leading the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 15-5 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in seven innings Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. In the home opener for the Cougars, Pokers went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBI, while Augle posted two hits as well (2-for-4) with a double, a run scored and a RBI. SXU evens out its conference record at 2-2 this year and improves to 7-6 overall with the win. Junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) got the victory (2-0) on the mound throwing the first six innings and allowing five hits, one run (unearned) and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Saint Xavier fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning when a passed ball allowed a run to score from third base. The Cougars quickly responded to the early deficit by cranking out four hits for four runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. Pokers and junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) each had RBI singles to left field in the first inning. Fielding errors and walks helped SXU plate three more runs in the second inning without registering a hit. Leading 7-1 after three innings, junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) led another offensive surge in the fourth that produced three more runs and extended the Saint Xavier to 10-1. Klein hit a two-run double to deep left field to spur the charge. Klein finished the game with four runs scored.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars took advantage of some more miscues by the Crimson Wave to score five more runs. Junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) had one of the big highlights of the inning hitting a two-run double to left centerfield, while Augle also had an RBI double down the right field line. Calumet College started to make things interesting in the top of the seventh with four walks, a hit batsman and a single up the middle leading to four runs in the frame, but senior lefty Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was able to end the game early with a strikeout to close out the inning.

Saint Xavier (7-6 overall/2-2 CCAC) continues the series with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Saturday, March 23, with a doubleheader in Whiting, Ind. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Oil City Stadium.
