The Shannon Center

Saint Xavier University's Shannon Center helps SXU better serve the needs of our current students, alumni, faculty and staff.  The state-of-the-art facility was built in 1999 and provides users with a weight room, two gymnasiums, one racquetball court, an indoor track, a Subway restaurant, a dance studio and meeting areas.

The 85,000 sq. ft. facility's main arena seats as many as 3,000 people for athletic events and special occasions such as graduation ceremonies, academic convocations and concerts.  It also serves as the home court for Saint Xavier's basketball and volleyball teams.

Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field

On Sept. 2, 2006, the Saint Xavier University Athletic Department honored Margaret Deaton and her family by officially dedicating the field in the name of her late husband, Bruce.  Bruce was one of the original founders of the Cougar Football Booster Club and, by naming the field in his honor, it will serve as a constant reminder to all student-athletes, past, present and future, of his generosity and spirit.

In the summer of 2006, the SXU Athletic Department completed the first part of a two-part renovation project when it removed the natural grass playing field and replaced it with a more modern synthetic playing surface called FieldTurf.  FieldTurf replicates a natural grass surface, but offers the durability and cost benefits of synthetic fields. FieldTurf is a safe alternative, resulting in a documented reduction of sports injuries. The sand and rubber infill system is the biggest technical development that the sports surfacing industry has seen in the last 25 years, which sets it apart from all other sports surfaces.

"This is a dream come true for our program and I can't thank everyone enough who was involved in making it possible," said Saint Xavier University football coach Mike Feminis. "Our student-athletes now have the opportunity to play on the same playing surface as many professional and major college teams.  This is the Rolls Royce of game fields, and since it doesn't wear down, we will be able to practice on it."

In the summer of 2007, SXU Athletics completed its two-part renovation project to Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field by installing lights.  With the addition of the lights, the Saint Xavier football and soccer teams now had the opportunity to host night games and practices.

Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field

The Saint Xavier University baseball team hosts all its home games at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field located on its Chicago campus.  The field is directly north of Lake Marion and positioned behind Regina Hall.  In fact, SXU students living in Regina Hall have the unique opportunity to watch Cougar baseball games from the window of their dorm room.  The field recently updated its backstop and dugouts with brick and added additional bleachers for spectators.  The dimensions for the field are 330 feet on the lines, 375 feet in the gaps and 400 feet to centerfield.  Admission to all SXU baseball games is complimentary.

SXU Softball Field

The SXU Softball Field is also located on the Chicago campus of Saint Xavier University on the northern end of campus.  The state-of-the-art facility includes two huge dugouts, warm-up pitching areas, and excellent viewing/seating areas for fans and spectators.  Parking is directly adjacent to the field on the southern edge, while the newly constructed O'Brien Hall was built along the right field line.  This gives certain SXU students, who live in O'Brien Hall, the unique ability to watch SXU softball games from the comfort of their dorm room.
